Continue reading to learn why you should act to ensure the success of the new hospital in Los Lunas and to ensure the best care is available for New Mexicans at large.
About the new hospital:
A New Hospital?
In a small community?!
In New Mexico?!!
This is an against all odds occasion.
I love New Mexico and want the best for New Mexicans.
But we are perhaps the worst state for a hospital or a provider to choose to establish.
- Because we have high numbers of Medicaid patients, the same care is reimbursed at a lower fee. Medicaid pays the worst of any other insurance. That makes it hard for a new hospital or provider to make ends meet.
- Because we have poorly designed malpractice laws, hospitals and doctors assume unreasonable risks to take care of patients. Hospitals have closed. Doctors have retired early and/or left the state.
- Soon after starting here, a provider learns they may lose their home and savings if they lose a malpractice case, which may happen, despite trying their best. Doctors who train in NM leave the state.
- Out-of-state trial attorneys fund New Mexico legislative campaigns to keep our poorly designed malpractice climate. Then they make their living suing New Mexican providers, while getting their own health care in their home state. Our state laws allow this. For the moment!
If you want your doctor to show up at their best, make sure they feel safe practicing in your home state. Thank your doctor. Act now, and let your doctor know you did. I promise, they would rather you do this than bring them cookies.
You don’t have a doctor? Now you know why.
